Trots enorma iranska olje- och gasreserver står Iran inför en allvarlig energikris på grund av årtionden av misskötsel, överdrivna subventioner, korruption, miljöförstöring och internationella sanktioner, vilket har förlamat dess infrastruktur och snedvridit energimarknaderna.

Islamistnationens långvariga system med massivt subventionerad energiprissättning främjar överdriven inhemsk konsumtion och ger incitament för smuggling över gränserna. Efterfrågan har ökat kraftigt till följd av bensinpriser som är betydligt lägre än de på den globala marknaden och ännu lägre för månatlig användning som ransoneras. Smugglingen minskar ytterligare Irans inhemska bensinförsörjning och står för 20 % av dess dagliga petroleumproduktion, som sedan exporteras till grannländer där vinstmarginalerna är betydligt större.
